Filial (parent) coaching is a programme that focuses on improving a parent-child relationship through coaching parents and giving them a tool-kit to be able to manage their child’s behaviours, achieve positive change in their child’s emotions and self management, as well as being able to use non-directive play skills regularly with their child.
This coaching is with parents only and is hands-on. It allows parents to discuss and role-play different situations with the therapist in order to gain confidence and eventually be able to use these new found skills with their child.
At the beginning of the coaching programme and every several weeks, parents will be asked to bring their child in for a play observation during which the therapist will observe parent-child interaction for 20 minutes and provide feedback thereafter..
Parents that can benefit from filial coaching are:
Parents who find it difficult to keep and enforce boundaries with their child/children;
Parents who are having a difficult time communicating with their child/children;
Parents who are having difficulty managing their child/ children’s behaviours;
Parents who want to understand their child/ children more or learn how to play with them.
The programme is run as an 8-week programme, however, progress and needs for further sessions is discussed and assessed along the way.
